Signed copy of Freedom Charter under hammer

By Warren Gwilt

One of the most valuable signed copies of the ANC's original Freedom Charter is to be auctioned in London - to bolster the pension of one of the men who signed it.

The historic document signed by Albert Luthuli, president of the ANC; Leon Levy, president of the SA Congress of Trades Unions; Monty Naiker, president of the National Indian Congress; Jimmy Laguma, president of the SA Coloured People's Congress; and Pieter Beyleveld, president of the SA Congress of Democrats, is being auctioned through London auction house Bonhams.

The South African Heritage Resource Agency (Sahra) has denied the document an exit permit, to prevent it leaving the country.
